Byron, Keats and Coleridge The Poetic Masters of the Romantic Period - Literature Essay Samples

Of all the English poets that comprise the Romantic period, George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824), John Keats (1795-1821), and Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) stand as the quintessential masters of Romantic poetry. Their contributions to the aesthetics of versification, from which emerged a concept of the poetic imagination that acted as a single unifying force within all creative acts. . . (and) defined the doctrine of Romanticism (Holmes 108), are highly representative of the Romantic period as evidenced by Byrons She Walks in Beauty, Keats major odes (Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn and Ode to Melancholy) and Coleridges Rime of the Ancient Mariner.At first, the term Romanticism referred to the characteristics of romances written in the Neo-Classical style which emphasized a strict adherence to form and function without what some call flowery language or literary extravagance. But in the 18th century, Romanticism came to designate a new kind of exotic landscape lorde d over by the outcast wanderer, always heroic but cursed and often on some desperate quest in search of self-identity and discovery. The penultimate example of Romantic poetrys commitment to these ideals occurs in William Wordsworths preface to the second edition of the Lyrical Ballads (1800), where he declares that all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings (Lowes 246). In contrast, the poetry of the Victorian era, written during the reign of Queen Victoria, centered on contemporary social problems and did away with the poetical attitudes of self-indulgence to focus on human culture and the social structures that resulted from the Industrial Revolution.On the afternoon of June 11, 1814, at the home of Lady Sitwell, George Gordon, Lord Byron, upon seeing his cousin Lady Anne Wilmot Horton in a mourning dress of spangled black (Leung 312), was so moved that by the next day he had written She Walks in Beauty, first published in Hebrew Melodies in 1815.In this mag nificent poem, Byron utilizes numerous metaphors to describe the beauty of his cousin, a rather prim and pretty girl celebrated in two of his most entrancing linesShe walks in beauty, like the night/Of cloudless climes and starry skies. In essence, Byron is comparing her with the beauties of the natural world, for her loveliness is cloudless like the dark and starry night and her aspect or physicality is imbued with all thats best of dark and bright which symbolizes her dual nature as a woman of varying Romantic temperaments . Yet Byrons main focus is on her head and face, where the nameless grace. . . waves in every raven tress, being her black hair (a symbol of darkness) and the light softens her face amid thoughts serenely sweet. . . (a symbol of brightness). But the most telling aspect of She Walks in Beauty concerns the idealized womans soul which is at peace with all below and her heart which is innocent, a trait very important to Byron which he equates as a necessary compone nt for true love and adoration during the Romantic period in England.The great symbolic voice of the true Romantic poet can best be heard in John Keats romantic odes. In Ode to a Nightingale, Keats relates that his heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains/My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk (1st stanza, lines 1-2), which shows that Keats longs for happiness and wishes to be free like the nightingale, a symbol of great importance to the Romantic poets, for it represents freedom of expression and flights of fancy into the sublime. Thus, this image conjures up the idea that the poet has drunk poison (hemlock) which illustrates his deep longings for a spirit free of pain and misery, a reflection of the often poverty-stricken lives led by a good number of Romantic poets.The lines Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave/Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare (2nd stanza, 15-16) in Keats Ode on a Grecian Urn, also displays images of want and unhappiness. The poet, while gazing at the Grecian urn covered with mythological motifs, sees within the leaf-fringed legend (1st stanza, line 5) shapes of deities or mortals (line 6) which reflects the poets yearning to retain his youth, much like Byron or Percy Shelley who wished to be immortal and ageless.In Ode on Melancholy, Keats truly explores the realms of unhappiness and bitterness with the lines Your mournful Psyche, nor the downy owl/A partner in your sorrows mysteries/For shade to shade will come too drowsily/And drown the wakeful anguish of the soul (1st stanza, lines 7-10). These forlorn images, a symbol of the poets melancholy, can also be applied to other Romantic poets, for they too suffered from the anguish of the soul which reflects their poetic ideals and their strivings for youth and happiness amid the turmoil of human existence. As Catherine Poole notes, Keats seems to dominate these odes with his longing to escape from the world of human suffering to (a) superior domain in his own imagination (Keats Odes, Internet).In Samuel Taylor Coleridges Rime of the Ancient Mariner, considered as the quintessential masterpiece of English Romantic poetry, the symbolic themes of mystery and the supernatural play a very crucial role in the poems overall effect which John Hill Spencer sees as Coleridges attempt to understand the mystery surrounding the human soul in a universe moved by forces and powers. . . immanent and transcendent (157). Rime was first published in Lyrical Ballads in 1798, a collection of poetry written and published jointly by Coleridge and his good friend, fellow Romantic poet William Wordsworth; yet the text of the poem generally in use today appeared in Sibylline Leaves in 1817. The narrative in Rime is based on many sources and some of the ideas expressed were inspired by other pieces of Gothic/Romantic verse read by Coleridge.A number of symbolic metaphors used in Rime reflect the ideals and imaginations of nearly all the Romantic poets, such as the mysteries of life and death, the realms of spirit and the subconscious mind and especially the depth of the poets own psychological understanding of the world, expressed through great conviction, beauty and the transcendence of reality.BibliographyHolmes, Richard. Pronouncing the Spanish W

Unlike most letters of the Spanish alphabet, the w (officially called the uve doble and sometimes ve doble, doble ve or doble u) does not have a fixed sound. That is because the w is native to neither Spanish nor to Latin, from which Spanish evolved. In other words, the w appears only in words of foreign origin. As a result, the w is usually pronounced similarly to its pronunciation in the words original language. Since English is the language most commonly used as a foreign source of words in modern Spanish, the w is most frequently pronounced like its common pronunciation in English, the sound the letter has in words such as water and witch. If you come across a Spanish word with a w and dont know how its pronounced, you can usually give it the English w pronunciation and be understood. It isnt uncommon for native Spanish speakers to add a g sound (like the g in go but much, much softer) at the beginning of the w sound. For example, waterpolo is often pronounced as if it were spelled guaterpolo, and hawaiano (Hawaiian) is often pronounced as if it were spelled haguaiano or jaguaiano. This tendency to pronounce the w as if it were gw varies with region and among individual speakers. In words of Germanic origin other than English, the Spanish w is often pronounced as if it were a b or v (the two letters have the same sound). In fact, this is often true even for some words that come from English; wà ¡ter (toilet) is often pronounced as if it were spelled và ¡ter. An example of a word usually pronounced with the b/v sound is wolframio, a word for the metal tungsten. For some words that have been part of Spanish for several generations or more, alternative spellings have been developed. For example, wà ¡ter is often spelled as và ¡ter, whisky (whiskey) is often spelled as gà ¼isqui, and watio (watt) is often vatio. Changes in spelling are uncommon with recently imported words. Why Is Modern Art Important - 918 Words

When you look at an artist artwork are your first thoughts the type of art painting is? Do you look at the artwork and automatically know the style and the time period the art comes from? Or are you the type of person that likes to read the information box underneath or alongside the artwork? If you were to ask me any of these questions this time last year, I probably wouldn’t really know and would tell you that I was the type of person that has to look at the information box. With me I always thought I wasn’t really into art, but I soon learned without certain artwork or artist a lot of things such as technology or films that we have now wouldn’t be accessible for us today. The risk registers is used to collate and make a summary of the various types of indentified risk. The risk are reviewed on the basis of various types of risks scores and level of occurrence the various types of risks. The performance management is completely based on the quantitative assessment of the risk associated. Conclusion The purpose of this study was to prepare a risk management plan for Raffles Education Corp. It deals with identification and analysis of the risks management plan based on identification of thirty risk indicators and also providing a treatment of the eight of such issues observed in the risk registered. The measurement of the risk is based on parameters such as control risk level, control risk score, control likelihood and risk accepted. The treatment plan of the risk provides the guidelines treatment options, rating after treatment, costs and benefits analysis of the risk, preferred options and persons responsible for the correction of the risk causing factors. Young Goodman Brown Analysis Essay The Downfall of Young Goodman Brown Young GoodmanBrown, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story that is thick withallegory. Goodman Brown almost immediately declares that he kepthis meeting with the Devil and no longer wishes to continueon his errand with the Devil. He says that he comes from arace of honest men and good Christians and that his fatherhad never gone on this errand and nor will he. The Devil isquick to point out however that he was with his father andgrandfather when they were flogging a woman or burning anIndian village, respectively. These acts are ironic in that theywere bad deeds done in the name of good, and it shows thathe does not come from good Christians. When GoodmanBrowns first excuse not to carry on with the errand provesto be unconvincing, he says he cant go because of his wife,Faith. And because of her, he can not carry out the errandany further. At this point the Devil agrees with him and tellshim to turn back to prevent that Faith should come to anyharm like the old woman in front of them on the path. Ironically, Goodman Browns faith is harmed because thewoman on the path is the woman who taught him hiscatechism in youth, and was still his moral and spiritualadviser. The Devil and the woman talk and afterward,Brown continues to walk on with the Devil in the disbelief ofwhat he had just witnessed. Ironically, he blames the womanfor consorting with the Devil but his own pride stops himfrom realizing that his faults are the same as the womans. Brown again decides that he will no longer to continue on hiserrand and rationalizes that just because his teacher was notgoing to heaven, why should he quit my dear Faith, and goafter her. At this, the Devil tosses Goodman Brown his staff(which will lead him out of his Eden) and leaves him. Goodman Brown begins to think to himself about hissituation and his pride in himself begins to build. Hawthorne at this point remarks about the instinct thatguides mortal man to evil. This is a direct statement from theauthor that he believes that mans natural inclination is to leanto evil than good. Goodman Brown had at this point lost hisfaith in God, therefore there was nothing restraining hisinstincts from moving towards evil because he had been leadout from his utopian image of society. At this point,Goodman Brown goes mad and challenges evil. He feelsthat he will be the downfall of evil and that he is strongenough to overcome it all. This is another demonstration ofBrowns excessive pride and arrogance. He believes that heis better than everyone else in that he alone can destroy evil. Brown then comes upon the ceremony which is setup like aperverted Puritan temple. The altar was a rock in the middleof the congregation and there were four trees surroundingthe congregation with their tops ablaze, like candles. A redlight rose and fell over the congregation which cast a veil ofevil over the congregation over the devil worshippers. Brown starts to take notice of the faces that he sees in theservice and he recognizes them all, but he then realizes thathe does not see Faith and hope came into his heart. This isthe first time that the word hope ever comes into the storyand it is because this is the true turning point for GoodmanBrown. If Faith was not there, as he had hoped, he wouldnot have to live alone in his community of heathens, which hedoes not realize that he is already apart of. Another way thatthe hope could be looked at is that it is all one of theChristian triptych. (Capps 25) The third part of the triptychwhich is never mentioned throughout the story is charity. IfBrown had had charity it would have been the antidotethat would have allowed him to survive without despair theinformed state in which he returned to Salem. The leader of the service than addresses the crowd ofconverts in a disturbing manner. He informs them that all themembers of the congregation are the righteous, honest, andincorruptible of the community. The sermon leader theninforms the crowd of their leaders evil deeds such asattempted murder of the spouse and wife, adultery, andobvious blasphemy. After his sermon, the leader informsthem to look upon each other and Goodman Brown findshimself face to face with Faith. The leader begins up againdeclaring that Evil is the nature of mankind and hewelcomes the converts to communion of your race. The closest Brown comes toshowing an emotion is when a hanging twig, that had beenall on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew. YoungGoodman Brown ends with Brown returning to Salem atearly dawn and looking around like a bewildered man. Hecannot believe that he is in the same place that he just thenight before; because to him, Salem was no longer home. He felt like an outsider in a world of Devil worshippers andbecause his basic means of order, his religious system, isabsent, the society he was familiar with becomesnightmarish. (Shear 545) He comes back to the townprojecting his guilt onto those around him. (Tritt 114)Brown expresses his discomfort with his new surroundingsand his excessive pride when he takes a child away from ablessing given by Goody Cloyse, his former Catechismteacher, as if he were taking the child from the grasp of thefiend himself. His anger towards the community isexemplified when he sees Faith who is overwhelmed withexcitement to see him and he looks sternly and sadly intoher face, and passed on without a greeting. Brown cannoteven stand to look at his wife with whom he was at theconvert service with. He feels that even though he was at theDevils service, he is still better than everyone else becauseof his excessive pride. Brown feels he can push his ownfaults on to others and look down at them rather than look athimself and resolve his own faults with himself. GoodmanBrown was devastated by the discovery that the potentialfor evil resides in everybody. The rest of his life is destroyedbecause of his inability to face this truth and live with it. Thestory, which may have been a dream, and not a real lifeevent, planted the seed of doubt in Browns mind whichconsequently cut him off from his fellow man and leaves himalone and depressed. His life ends alone and miserablebecause he was never able to look at himself and realize thatwhat he believed were everyone elses faults were his aswell. Why You Should Use JavaScript on Your Site Not everyone has JavaScript available in their web browser and a number of those who are using browsers where it is available have it turned off. It is therefore necessary that your web page be able to function properly for those people without using any JavaScript at all. Why then would you want to add JavaScript to a web page that already works without it? Reasons Why You May Want to Use JavaScript There are several reasons for why you may want to use JavaScript on your web page even though the page is usable without the JavaScript. Most of the reasons relate to providing a friendlier experience for those of your visitors who do have JavaScript enabled. Here are a few examples of proper use of JavaScript to improve your visitors experience. JavaScript Is Great for Forms Where you have forms on your web page that your visitor needs to fill out that form content will need to be validated before it can be processed. You will, of course, have server-side validation that validates the form after it is submitted and which reloads the form highlighting the errors if anything invalid has been entered or mandatory fields are missing. That requires a round trip to the server when the form is submitted to perform the validation and report the errors. We can speed up that process significantly by duplicating that validation using JavaScript and by attaching much of the JavaScript validation to the individual fields. That way the person filling out the form who has JavaScript enabled has immediate feedback if what they enter into a field is invalid instead of their filling out the whole form and submitting it and then having to wait for the next page to load to give them feedback. The form works both with and without JavaScript and provides more immediate feedba ck when it can. A Slideshow A slideshow consists of a number of images. In order for the slideshow to function without JavaScript the next and previous buttons that work the slideshow need to reload the entire web page substituting the new image. This will work but will be slow, particularly if the slideshow is only one small part of the page. We can use JavaScript to load and replace the images in the slideshow without needing to reload the rest of the web page and so make the slideshow operation much faster for those of our visitors with JavaScript enabled. A Suckerfish Menu A suckerfish menu can operate entirely without JavaScript (except in IE6). The menus will open when the mouse hovers over them and close when the mouse is removed. Such opening and closing will be instant with the menu just appearing and disappearing. By adding some JavaScript we can have the menu appear to scroll out when the mouse moves over it and scroll back in when the mouse moves off of it giving a nicer appearance to the menu without affecting the way the menu works. JavaScript Enhances Your Web page In all appropriate uses of JavaScript, the purpose of the JavaScript is to enhance the way the web page works and to provide those of your visitors who have JavaScript enabled with a friendlier site than is possible without the JavaScript. By using JavaScript in an appropriate way you encourage those who have a choice as to whether they will allow the JavaScript to run or not to actually have it turned on for your site. Remember that a number of those who do have a choice and who have chosen to turn JavaScript off have done so due to the way in which some sites completely misuse javaScript so as to make their visitors experience of their site worse rather than better.
